By building the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund in 1974, we created the structural preconditions for hosting championships. The expansion of the stadium in 1996 added 13,000 seats to the West and East stand without interrupting game operations. In addition, the project included the turnkey expansion of five levels below the new upper tier of the West stand, and of four levels below the East stand. The food and beverage area as well as the press and conference center also set markers in stadium construction. The rooms required for stadium announcer, police and security staff, as well as the commentators' booths for radio and television are on the East stand, offering a direct view of the stadium inside. For the FIFA World Cup 2006, the stadium corners were filled, thus creating space for another 14,700 seats. As a result, the stadium now has more than 60,000 seats—the capacity required for hosting World Cup semi-finals.
